Global Rescue Ukraine Statement

On Sunday, April 23, 2017, an American paramedic supporting the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (OSCE- SMM), was killed and two others injured after their vehicle hit an explosive device in eastern Ukraine. Paramedic support for the OSCE-SMM is provided by Global Rescue Coöperatief, U.A., a European subsidiary of Global Rescue.

Joseph Stone, 36, of Tucson, Arizona, had been a part of the support team for more than a year.

“We are shocked and saddened by Joseph Stone’s death in this tragic incident. We will be doing everything possible in the coming days to support his family and will work with the OSCE and the Ukrainian and European governments as they conduct their investigations,” said Global Rescue Chief Executive Officer Daniel Richards.

The incident took place at 11:17 a.m. local time near Pryshyb in the Luhansk region. It is the first time in three years that one of the more than 600 SMM members in Ukraine has been killed.

On 21 March 2014, the Permanent Council of OSCE decided to deploy the Special monitoring mission of unarmed civilian observers to Ukraine. The ultimate goal of the SMM is to help Ukraine to reduce tensions and facilitate dialogue between all the sides.  Global Rescue Coöperatief has provided medical and associated logistical support to OSCE members since 2015.

With 57 participating States in North America, Europe and Asia, the OSCE is the world’s largest regional security organization. The OSCE works for stability, peace and democracy for more than a billion people, through political dialogue about shared values and through practical work that makes a lasting difference.

Global Rescue Deploys Teams to Support 2017 Climbing Season

Lebanon, New Hampshire, March 15, 2017 – As climbers from around the world travel to Nepal and Mount Everest in the weeks ahead for the spring Himalayan climbing season, Global Rescue, the leading provider of medical, security, evacuation and travel risk management services, will have its highly trained personnel on the ground, ready to perform life-saving rescue and evacuation missions.

Global Rescue, the pioneering provider of worldwide field rescue, medical advisory and evacuation services, has conducted rescue and evacuation missions in Nepal every season for more than a decade. Falls, avalanches, exposure and altitude sickness can all pose serious hazards for climbers.

Following the 2016 Everest season with approximately 600 summits, hundreds of climbers are expected to attempt to summit Everest this spring. Interest is anticipated to be high in part because the Nepal government will honor through 2019 the climbing permits from 2014 and 2015, when the climbing seasons were aborted due to deadly avalanches. Beyond Everest, climbers seek to tackle peaks including Lhotse, Nuptse, Mera, Cho Oyu and Annapurna.

In 2016, Global Rescue performed more than 30 rescue and evacuation missions in the Himalaya, including dozens on Everest. In 2015, Global Rescue responded to over 125 requests for assistance following the Nepal earthquake and triaged more than 200 humanitarian cases in the first 24 hours after the quake.

“Global Rescue physicians and paramedic rescue specialists are deployed in Nepal to assist climbers who are ill, injured or need to be evacuated,” said Dan Richards, CEO and founder of Global Rescue. “As we have done for more than a decade, our personnel will be on the ground in Nepal and prepared to support our members who need our life-saving services.”

Global Rescue has a longstanding relationship with the climbing community and leading climbing organizations, including the American Alpine Club, choose Global Rescue because of the company’s track record of providing critical services on some of the world’s largest mountains.

Global Rescue 2017 Travel Safety Survey:  Europe Emerges Amidst Persistent Concerns for Terrorism

Lebanon, N.H., February 8, 2017Global Rescue, the leading provider of medical, security, evacuation and travel risk management services to enterprises, governments and individuals, today released results of the Global Rescue 2017 Travel Safety Survey. The data reveals that a clear majority (84%) have concerns for their safety for 2017 travel. Among participants expressing some level of concern, more highlighted Europe compared to Africa and the Middle East.

Top findings include:

  • Travelers have concerns, but are likely to travel anyway. Eighty-four percent (84%) of respondents are at least “Somewhat concerned” about travel safety in 2017, including 32% who say they are at least “Concerned” or “Very concerned.” One in four respondents (26%) say they are more concerned about travel safety in 2017 compared to 2016. However, despite these concerns, nearly all (96%) say it is either “Likely” or “Very likely” they will travel in 2017.

  • Concerns emerge about travel to Europe. Europe has emerged as a top-three destination in terms of concerns, along with Africa and the Middle East. Intensity of concern is significantly greater in the Middle East, though in terms of overall concerns, Europe leads the way.
Among respondents who expressed some level of concern (i.e. “Somewhat concerned,” “Concerned,” or “Very concerned”), 75% pointed to Europe, followed by Africa (73%) and the Middle East (73%). However, intensity of concern is highest in the Middle East, with 45% “Very Concerned.”

  • Terrorism remains top of mind when it comes to travel threats in 2017. Terrorism ranks among the top perceived threat to respondents, with 55% ranking it as either first or second on a list of the greatest threats they see while traveling in 2017. Forty-four percent (44%) of respondents rated health/medical issues as a top-two threat, and 37% ranked crime as a top-two threat. Traffic accidents, which is the leading cause of death for US citizens abroad, was fourth, with 23% rating it as a top-two threat. This highlights the incongruity between actual threats (measured by US citizen deaths overseas) and perceived threats. In other words, travelers appear most concerned about terrorism when in reality the odds are extremely low that they will actually be affected.

“The world is an increasingly unpredictable place,” said Global Rescue CEO and founder Dan Richards. “The good news is that despite their fears, most travelers are continuing to travel. It is more likely that a car accident or a slip-and-fall will derail a vacation than a terrorist attack, but as evidenced by recent terrorist activity in Europe and other places historically considered “safe,” terrorism is a legitimate safety concern.

Despite perceptions of risk from terrorism, it accounts for only about 3% of U.S. citizen deaths overseas, according to US Department of State figures. According to the data, vehicle accidents (30%), homicides (19%), and even suicides (14%) account for many more U.S. citizen deaths overseas.

The Global Rescue 2017 Travel Safety Survey was conducted December 28, 2016, through January 14, 2017. The study is based on a survey of 1,000 current and former Global Rescue members ages 25 to 70 or older, with household incomes of $35,000 to $200,000 or more.
